About Nisarg Rakshak

Nisarg Rakshak is a non-government organization dedicated to protecting nature, promoting environmental awareness, and empowering communities through education and sustainable practices. Established in 2008 by Mr. Udaykumar Shiroorkar, then Assistant Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, the organization has consistently worked to create a greener, safer, and more responsible society.

Our name, Nisarg Rakshak (meaning Protector of Nature), reflects our commitment to safeguarding the environment while fostering social responsibility and resilience in communities.

To strengthen our impact, Nisarg Rakshak is registered under Section 12A of the Income Tax Act, enabling us to operate as a recognized charitable trust and allowing donors to support our initiatives.

About Our Founder

Mr. Shiroorkar popularly known as "The Demolition Man" has served Mumbai for decades as a civic leader, administrator, and changemaker. Known for his integrity, courage, and vision, he has been at the forefront of urban governance and grassroots empowerment.

• Administrative Leadership: As Assistant Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, he led critical drives against illegal constructions and unsafe structures in some of the city’s most challenging areas. His bold actions earned him both respect and threats, making his role one of the toughest in the civic body.

• Empowerment Through Education: He initiated a unique program that encouraged and supported over 23 Class IV civic workers to complete their secondary education (SSC). This life-changing step not only elevated their confidence but also brought promotions and better livelihoods.

• Inspiration in Culture: His journey inspired the Marathi feature film Ata Thambaycha Naay! (2025), which portrays his vision of resilience, education, and service to society.

• Public Service Beyond Office: Even beyond his civic role, Mr. Shiroorkar continues to champion causes of environment protection, education, and sustainable living through Nisarg Rakshak.
